Lunch with Professor Katy Barnett from the University of Melbourne

It goes on to describe how she has a mild form of cerebral palsy, and how all her life she battled against the limited perspectives of others from when she was at school, until she entered the legal profession. Despite her perceived disability, and the challenges arising from it, she has risen to a very senior academic role at the University of Melbourne.
Katy attended schools in Melbourne (including MLC, Kew) and in the UK before commencing an Arts/Law degree at the University of Melbourne. She graduated with Honours and went on to complete a PhD in 2010 entitled "Accounting for profit for breach of contract: a theoretical and practical justification.” Prior to commencing postgraduate study, Katy was a Research Assistant to the Court of Appeal at the Supreme Court of Victoria, she completed her articles with Freehills, was an Associate to Justice Mandie of the Supreme Court of Victoria and was a banking litigator at Russell Kennedy. She keeps up her connections to practice as a legal consultant at Sharpe and Abel.
Appointed a sessional lecturer at the Melbourne Law School in 2006, Katy became a permanent member of staff in 2010. In 2016, she received the Barbara Falk Award for excellence in teaching and currently teaches courses in the JD and Law Masters programs.
In 2013, Katy spent several months in Oxford, as a visiting scholar at BNC, as part of the Melbourne-Oxford Faculty Exchange program.
Professor Barnett has published widely on Remedies Law and also has interests in other aspects of the Law including comparative law, animal law, behavioral economics and legal history.
She has written several legal articles and monographs, including one based on her PhD thesis, and is also the author of a young adult fiction novel, “The Earth Below” which was published in 2019. Her autobiographical piece “I don’t dance like other cats” (describing how she has overcome lifelong difficulties with walking associated with cerebral palsy) was the most read story on “Right Now” the website for Human Rights in Australia. Katy’s most recent publication is a book with the intriguing title: “Guilty Pigs: the Weird and Wonderful History of Animal Law” co-authored with Prof Jeremy Gans, published in February this year. Some of us may have heard her talking about it on Radio National’s “The Law Report” recently. In February 2021, she was elected to the Editorial Advisory Board of Melbourne University Press as the Law member.
Katy is passionate about diversity in academia and is a member of the Heterodox Academy. She is foundation editor of the Melbourne Law School blog “Opinions on High” with Professor Jeremy Gans and Dr Brad Jessup.
